6/3/2011  Illini Racing Series Kankakee Results

In the first heat, the 83 of Patrick Bruns took an early lead from the outside of the first row and was running smooth and quick, until lap 6 where the 33 of Tyler Deschaine brought out the yellow. Joe Knippel had only one shot for the lead on the re-start but Bruns held his position and went on to win the heat. Scott Koerner (4) had to pull off early with an over-heating issue. The finish was: 1st – 83 Bruns, 2nd – 11 Knippel, 3rd – 31 Seach, 4th – 3 Drangmeister, 5th – 1 Dunning, 6th – 4 Koerner.

Getting the feature started turned out to be a little on the difficult side, with first a # 33 Deschaine spin, followed on the next start by a #52 Willis spin. Finally, on the 3rd try, the Illini Midgets got going. Whoops… only to stop again in lap 3 where #33 spun again, which put an end to his night, due to the two spin rule. During all the mayhem, the #83 Bruns machine and the #31 Seach machine made their way from 5th row outside and 6th row outside to 1st and 2nd by the 4th lap. 10 more laps would be logged into the books before the race would have to be stopped again when #77 Critchett left the track between turns 1 and 2. Not the normal place to exit. He was O.K. but would not return to the race. The last 5 laps got #31 Seach closer and closer to Bruns for the lead, but time and laps ran out before he could make a pass. The feature finish was: 1st – 83 Patrick Bruns, 2nd – 31 Ray Seach, 3rd – 11 Joe Knippel, 4th – 6 Eddie Sauer, 5th – 1 Scott Dunning, 6th - 52 Aaron Willis, 7th – 7 Mike Gass, 8th – 5 Sean Murphy, 9th – 3 Rich Drangmeister, 10th - 0 Brian Dobis, 11th – 77 Lamont Critchett, 12th – 4 Scott Koerner, 13th – 33 Tyler Deschaine.

The Series continues on the Wilmot dirt Saturday June 11th before taking part in the STARS Opener at Grundy County Speedway on June 18th. See you at the races.

5/28/2011  Illini Midget Opener at Rockford

Scott Koerner in the 2x4 Sesco powered #4 cornered the lead as the Illini Midget Racing Series made their 2011 debut at the high-banked speed plant built for cars just like these. As the 16 car field maneuvered around the quarter-mile oval, heat winner Ben Gillis' #11 sliced and diced through the field before inheriting the top spot when Koerner's night was cut short with mechanical problems.

Local driver Tyler Deschaine's #33 made contact the #52 EcoTec Chevy of Aaron Willis Jr. and sent the new track record holder shooting into the turn one wall with eight laps completed in the 25-lap feature event. When the green flag waved, Gillis grabbed a comfortable cushion and zoomed away into the night as Deschaine and Loran Critchett Jr. dueled for second.

Critchett rolled past Deschaine with 15 to go and by the time the halfway point came and went, he'd taken over the lead from Gillis. Deschaine followed suit and relegated Ben Gillis to third as heat race winner Patrick Bruns busted through the lineup behind them. Bruns burst into the picture and grabbed the runner-up spot thanks in part to a Deschaine slip up in the corner.

Bruns quickly applied pressure to the leader and was closing on Loran Critchett Jr. when the yellow flag flew for a Lamont Critchett spin with four laps left setting up a shootout for the win.

The top two went side-by-side for the lead as Bruns looked high and low before escaping with the top spot behind a daring maneuver on the outside of Critchett Jr. with two to go. Bruns cruised through the final circuit and grabbed the opening win of the year for the Illini Midgets.

Loran Critchett Jr. settled for a disappointing second, edging Deschaine by a nose at the line. Tyler Trainor and Sean Murphy came home in fourth and fifth respectively completing the top five.

The Illini Racing Series moves on to the high banks of Kankakee County Speedway for the first dirt race of the year Friday June 3rd. NASCAR star Ken Schrader will be competing in the UMP series too.

Ten Illinois Drivers To Compete For “Tony Bettenhausen 100”

At least 10 Illinois natives are expected to compete in Saturday’s 48th running of one of America’s most revered auto racing classics – the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The 100-mile USAC K & N Silver Crown Championship Series race presented by Optima Batteries continues a long tradition of motorsports excellence at the historic 1-mile dirt oval. Billy Winn won the inaugural in 1934 and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is the defending champion.
Four Illinois drivers, including Tinley Park’s Gary and Tony Bettenhausen, Chicago’s Emil Andres and Champaign’s Don Branson, have won the classic event. Tony won in 1947, 1950 and 1951, Gary won in 1978 ad 1983, Andres won in 1939 and Branson won in 1966.

Donnie Beechler of Springfield is among this year’s crop hoping to become the fifth Illini winner and is joined by Robinson’s Mat Neely, Olney’s Levi Jones, Galesburg’s A. J. Fike, Springfield’s Jeff Leka, Murphysboro’s Randy Bateman, Elkhart’s Chris Urish, Champaign’s Patrick Bruns, Granite City’s Tad Roach and Canton’s Chris Windom. Saturday’s race would be the first this season for Beechler, Bateman, Leka and Roach, while Fike finished second in last Sunday’s race at Iowa Speedway. Neely has a best of fifth this year, while Jones has a sixth, Urish has a ninth and Bruns has a 10th. Windom’s only 2008 appearance results in a 23rd-place finish.

In addition, Johnny Parsons of Speedway, Ind., who started a dozen Indianapolis 500s and finished fifth twice, is seeking his 152nd career Silver Crown start and will pilot a car fielded by Benton, Ill. car owner Ricky Nix.

Five previous race champions are expected to compete, including defending winner Stenhouse. Tracy Hines (2006), Brian Tyler (2004-05), Russ Gamester (1998) and Dave Darland (1997, 1999 and 2003) are the others.

Hines holds the 1-lap track qualifying record of 122.846 mph set in 2006. Jack Hewitt set the 100-mile race record of 106.920 mph in 1987.

Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. leads the series standings entering Saturday’s race. He is 53 points ahead of Darland, 58 ahead of Jones and 61 ahead of Hines.

UPDATE ON PATRICK BRUNS

by Marty Boyer

Midwest Sprint Car Series driver Patrick Bruns sustained minor injuries on Saturday night September 9th, 2006 in a serious crash at Mt. Vernon, IL Raceway on the start of the second heat race when another car veered left and made contact with the right front of Bruns’ car. The Champaign, IL driver was then transported by ambulance to Mt. Vernon’s Good Samaritan Hospital after being evaluated by paramedics at the track.

The Good Samaritan doctors first diagnosed a mild concussion, which had caused Patrick to temporarily lose his vision immediately following the accident, as well as a bulging hematoma in his neck. He also had numerous bruises throughout his entire body, most notably around his ankles and the top of his right foot. Patrick was released later that evening after the standard treatments and tests.

Bruns has always been very conscientious about safety equipment and was extremely appreciative of the support from Bell Helmets. "I can’t possibly thank Steve Thomas at Bell Racing enough. My Bell helmet saved me from any serious head injuries. I was also wearing head and neck restraints including the Hutchins and a Bell Neck collar. My car owner Gary Cravens always builds a safe racecar. I had good protection in the cockpit and I almost walked away!"

Doctors estimate Patrick will have a full recovery and be able to race again in a week or two. He has no plans for this weekend, but hasn’t given up on the Lawrenceburg, IN race dates on September 29th and 30th. Unfortunately the Cravens ride is not going to be available for the last 2 races at Lawrenceburg to end the season. The sprint car had been too damaged to be repaired after a series of barrel rolls and flipping end for end four or five times. Patrick is in search for a ride for the last 2 races on the MSCS schedule for 2006. "I hope something develops in time for Lawrenceburg. There is no way that Gary Cravens’ car could be back together by then."

Patrick Bruns was recently voted #17 out of the Top-50 drivers selected for the Racin' For A Livin' Competition to be aired this winter. Fans voted for their favorite drivers from March 28 through July 31, 2006 on the show's website
www.racinforalivin.com. Patrick Bruns is currently 15th in MSCS points, and 3rd in MSCS Rookie points despite only running a limited schedule with the series this season. Without a ride those figures are not likely to hold, and the season may end prematurely for the Champaign Campaigner! Car owners with an open seat can reach Patrick by contacting the MSCS office or going to his web site at www.brunsracing.com. "I hope I can find a ride for the last couple of shows this year. I just want to race."

NEWS UPDATE: PATRICK BRUNS

Henderson, KY. (Sept. 11, 2006) MSCS driver Patrick Bruns was injured Saturday night in a serious crash at Mt. Vernon Raceway. The Champaign, IL, driver was helped to the ambulance by emergency personnel, evaluated on site, and then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for further treatment . He was released later Saturday night after receiving emergency care followed by a battery of tests

Patrick Bruns was diagnosed as having a concussion. He also experienced hematoma in his neck. Add to that a lot of bruising from the series of flips which occurred at speed as the field took the green flag to start the second heat race.

Fortunately Bruns benefited from adequate safety features. "I can thank Steve Thomas at Bell Helmet. I was also wearing head and neck restraints including the Hans device. And car owner Gary Cravens always builds a safe racecar. I had good protection in the cockpit and the car stayed together. I almost walked away!"

Unfortunately the Cravens ride is not going to be available for the last 2 races at Lawrenceburg to end the season. The sprint had too much damage after the 4 or 5 end for end flips to be repaired. "There is no way the car could be back together by then."

Patrick is already feeling better and hopes to 100 % again in a week or two. He has no plans for this weekend but hasn’t given up on the Lawrenceburg race dates on September 29th and 30th. "I hope something develops in time for Lawrenceburg."

Patrick Bruns is currently 15th in MSCS points and 3rd in MSCS Rookie points. Without a ride those figures are not likely to hold. "I hope I can find a ride for the last couple of shows this year." Otherwise the season may end premature for the Champaign Campaigner! Car owners with an open seat can reach Patrick by contacting the MSCS office or going to his web site at www.brunsracing.com.

SPECIAL FEATURE edited by Eldon Butcher:

THE CHAMPAIGN CAMPAIGNER: ROOKIE PATRICK BRUNS

August 10, 2006. The Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series has one competitor who has been making strides in another racing endeavor. Patrick Bruns has become an MSCS series regular since joining the tour back on May 28th as one of the 12 rookie candidates competing for the 2006 Engler Machine and Tool Rookie of the Year honors. Simultaneously he has been pursuing another dream, that of earning a chance at a NASCAR ride for 2007.

Bruns has been busy garnering support over the past 5 months in quest of what could become a lifetime opportunity. He has been involved in a contest of grand scale with an enormous field of 2,000 applicants from the racing world. He was chosen along with 49 other contestants into the rookie selection phase for the upcoming new reality television show to be titled "Racin’ For A Livin."

Actually this mild mannered gentleman from Champaign, Il, works with his own insurance business during the week and races fire breathing sprint cars on the weekend. He had hoped to be one of the drivers that could put the "real" back into reality television.

These are his words based on deeds. Weekends this summer have been spent behind the wheel of Gary Cravens’ sprint car. The familiar white number 1c is a J&J chassis powered by a Cummins 410 racing engine. In that ride currently Bruns is third in MSCS Rookie points and up to 20th in the MSCS National Standings despite missing the first two events of the season.

Bruns’ racing career began when he was a teenager some 15 years ago. A hobby developed and with it a passion that took him in and out of several different racing divisions. He captured four championships in modified midget racing.

The developing reality show initially promised 12 spots for rookie talent. The award would be an oppportunity to race over a 14 week period for the exhilarating prize of competing with the professionals in the 2007 NASCAR Busch series. The final phase of the voting ended on July 31st. Patrick Bruns finished 17th. Votes were cast over the internet to www.racinforalivin.com by race fans. The final cut was made at the top 15 candidates. Patrick was so close; so close that he still has an out side chance to become involved in the program.

Patrick Bruns sums the opportunity up with a personal statement. "I would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support. I look forward to what potential doors may have been opened. Unfortunately we did not make the final cut for the top 15, but we have been chosen as an alternate." The race may not be over for Patrick Bruns. TV star to be or not , Midwest race fans can enjoy watching Patrick race at upcoming MSCS races. His favorite track is "wherever I am at." Saturday night he was at Western Kentucky Speedway where he finished a respectable 8th on the field.

As a postscript driver Patrick Bruns invites us one and all to
keep in touch with the Bruns' Racin for a Livin' Campaign throughout
the remaining stages in which he expects to be involved by going to
www.brunsracing.com . There you can find immediate updates and
breaking news throughout the season

Bruns misses out on dream
Two spots away from making reailty show

Wednesday, August 02, 2006

Lincoln native Patrick Bruns came up short of his dream Tuesday, as he missed out on one of the top 15 spots for the new NASCAR reality show, "Racin' for a Livin.'"

Bruns came in 17th place out of 50 finalists from among more than 2,000 entries for a chance to earn a shot at driving in a Busch Series race.

Bruns, who had climbed to as high as No. 11 in online fan voting just 10 days ago, failed to earn a spot despite endless effort during the past five months.

"It's absolute amazement," Bruns said. "I know I did nine radio shows (Monday). With the amount of activity we had going it makes me wonder what these other people had going. It's just hard to believe. I don't know what more I could have done.

"Who knows what the actual numbers are but it would really stink if we are only 100 votes out of 10th."

Since the field was narrowed to the top 50 drivers in March, Bruns, 30, has spent countless hours working his campaign, including TV and radio spots and an e-mail distribution list of thousands.

"Its hard to imagine (not being elected) as hard as everyone worked," Bruns said. "The support has been tremendous. I appreciate all the work everyone did on the campaign.

"I appreciate my supporters more than words can describe. Without them I wouldn't be sitting at 17. I wouldn't even be on the chart."

Despite the disappointment, Bruns still has an outside chance of participating on the show. He will be one of five alternates, meaning he has a chance to step in if one of the other drivers can't go.

All five alternates also have the opportunity to meet with NASCAR veterans and team owners.

"When you put it into perspective, you can't complain," Bruns said. "I am very pleased to have the opportunity to do it ... It's hard to imagine what the future will hold. At this point you have to keep an open mind."

Bruns, who is a financial adviser in Champaign, said the letdown wouldn't keep him away from the track. He plans on racing a Sprint Car in Nebo, Ky., this weekend.

"I'll go on," he said. "When you are born with it, its like an addiction and I'm not looking for a cure."

Bruns doesn't own a car, but drives for a half dozen or so car owners. It runs in the family: Brothers A.J. and Cory drive sprint cars, as did their father Roger in his younger days.

Racin' for a Livin' Results

After a long, intense battle, the dedicated Champaign, IL race car driver Patrick Bruns was voted #17 out of the Top-50 drivers selected for the Racin' For A Livin' Competition.  Fans voted for the Top-15 out of 50 drivers from March 28 through July 31, 2006 at the show's website www.racinforalivin.com.  Since the voting process began, Patrick consistently maintained one of the top positions which displays his ability to effectively promote himself to the general public.  Fortunately, when the votes were counted on the last day, Patrick captured enough votes to secure the 17th position out of the original 2000 candidates that applied.  Patrick did not make the Top-15 in his pursuit to race in the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series, however, he was chosen as an alternate.  The alternates will have the opportunity to test and train with the Team and the Veterans, and will be available to compete should any among the 20 contestants be found unable to participate for whatever reason.  They will be filmed during the testing and may possibly be aired, as well as be featured on the Insiders Club.  As another added twist, JVI Productions will host a runoff between the alternates.  Patrick has earned these achievements through demonstrated marketability over the past five months, while promoting himself and Racin' For A Livin' via newspaper, magazine, radio and television interviews without the help of a PR director or agent.

“I would like to personally thank everyone for their tremendous support.  The past 5 months have gone by so quickly.  I more than appreciate all of your support and am honored to have represented each of you in this competition.  In the end, we finished 17th out of over 2000 Drivers so we definitely can not be ashamed of that.  Once again I am more than grateful for the opportunity each of you gave me and I look forward to what potential doors may have been opened.  Thank you very much.”

Sincerely,

Patrick Bruns

Still in pre-production stages, the show originally began with thousands of drivers but has been narrowed down to only fifty.  Beginning March 28th, Patrick will be part of an online voting process on the show’s web site, www.racinforalivin.com .  The top twelve finalists capturing the most votes will compete against each other for the coveted prize: a chance to drive in the NASCAR BUSCH Series in 2007!  Click here to view a new promotional video clip with the shows theme song by Kory and the Fireflies.

Patrick is more than ready for a challenge of this magnitude.  He understands that Motorsports is a demanding pursuit, and gives racing the whole-hearted dedication it deserves.  Despite limited financial resources, Patrick continues to compete extremely well.  With numerous victories and championships already under his belt, the success and future of any team or company supporting him is destined to thrive.    He feels very fortunate for the great consideration his many supporters continue to show, especially all the wonderful car owners whom  provide countless racing opportunities. Patrick has also gained valuable experience from competing with many other successful drivers including; Tony Stewart , Kenny Irwin , Ryan Newman , J.J. Yeley , Mike Bliss , Jason Leffler and Carl Edwards .  All of which, with the proper financial backing, moved into more familiar racing sanctions including the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and the Indy Racing League

As an individual, Patrick lives his life with honorable, down-to-earth values, is very approachable and outgoing.  Some of his greatest strength on the track is an inherent understanding of the equipment, as well as the ability to predict track conditions and necessary responses.  He has always strived to better understand how cars work in order to contribute to the team's capabilities and accomplishments.  In short, we want to thank all of our loyal supporters.  Please enjoy your visit and come back often for new information.

This hometown country boy has the opportunity of a lifetime. He is the guy who is going to put the "real" back into reality television. He's an amateur race car driver with a list of accomplishments at least one page long, and it all started when his father traded an old lawn mower for his son's first race car 15 years ago. But, unlike many of his other life achievements, this one he can't do without help; help from people just like you.

This man, along with 49 other contestants, was selected out of 2,000 other applicants into the rookie selection phase of the new reality show, Racin' for a Livin'.  The top 12 rookies, based on popular vote, will race over a 14 week period for the exhilarating prize of competing with the professionals in the 2007 Busch series.

He has come a long way since racing his Hot Wheels™ in the fire-proof suit his mother made for him when he was only five. Fifteen years ago this rookie began his racing career which soon grew out of a hobby and into a passion. He has numerous victories in several different divisions, and four championships in modified midget racing--one in which he even managed to win with a concussion.  Knowing his passion for racing and addiction to winning leaves no mystery to why he was one of the 50 people chosen for a chance at one of the 12 spots on the show.

With a resume such as this, you probably would never have guessed that by day he operates his own insurance business.  I'll spare you the details about the hard work a man barely 30 had to go through to start his own business, and move ahead with how you can get him one lap closer to NASCAR !

And, one last detail, this NASCAR hopeful is Patrick Bruns, but to all of us, he's still the familiar boy next door.

Here's How to Vote: Go to www.racinforalivin.com and vote as many times as your finger will endure. This is the final week to do so; the voting ends on July 31st at 11:59 pm EST.

Patrick's got to be voted into one of the top 12 spots to be a part of the show.  Give a fellow of the business world your support!

Driver a click away from fame

By TROY HAYES H&R Staff Writer

CHAMPAIGN - Patrick Bruns is finding out just how much his friends and fans like him. So far, he's been ecstatic with their response.

The former Lincoln resident, now selling insurance and financial investment advice in Champaign, races anything he can get his hands on in his spare time. That diversity helped him land a spot in a field of 50 vying for a shot at reality TV.

"Racin' for a Livin' " is the brainchild of JVI Productions. It's a tryout-type show for racers with a seven-race Busch Series ride as the top prize. Bruns was selected from 2,000 applicants to participate in an online vote-off to pare the field to 12 (three alternates will also be on hand) for a 12-week fall schedule of races that - with the help of the viewing audience - will ultimately decide the winner.

"A friend mentioned it to me and, like everyone else, I just applied," said Bruns. "A panel chose the 50 based a lot on our racing resumes. I had just enough to make the grade."

The show will pit the 12 against each other in a series of tests and races before a combination of scores and votes decide the fate of one person a week. The show will feature the former host of The Learning Channel's Overhaulin,' Courtney Hansen, and will have NASCAR and Busch Series drivers on hand to provide tips and to help the contestants prepare each week.

The 30-year-old University of Illinois graduate has raced everything from midgets to winged sprints, from non-winged sprints to modifieds. He's sort of a mercenary now, only driving other people's cars and he's won all over the Midwest.

He's earned the highest of praise from at least one of those owners.

"He's driven for me for two years and I've been very pleased with him," said Marion's Gary Cravens. "If I wasn't, I wouldn't have asked him back."

Cravens believes if Bruns makes the show, it could be just what he needs to move up the ranks of racing.

"On this kid of thing, even if he doesn't get the Busch ride there will be a lot guys there that could give him a shot. Just to make it is a great opportunity."

He's got a lot of people working the mouse for him. His brother Spanky, who races winged sprints, estimated he alone has clicked three times more than the population (15,000) of Lincoln.

"At least that many," he said. "I put in a lot of hours clicking that mouse. You can do about a hundred an hour and I'd go four or five hours when I was at school."

Carpal tunnel syndrome aside, his family, friends and fans have all been willing to help.

"This could be a big break for him and for my middle brother (Aaron) and me," Spanky said. "He gets on the show, we could all benefit from it."

Patrick added the number of folks that have voted for him is impossible to gauge since he races far and wide - and that the Web site doesn't reveal hard numbers, just places - but he's sure it's a lot.

"I couldn't even begin to guess," he said. "But I know we have been in the top 20 for a while, so there are a bunch of people voting. The response to this from all of my friends and family and fans has been awesome. It's been a lot of fun."

He recently slipped from 11th to 16th, which would leave him a spot short of being an alternate. But he's not worried.

"We need some more votes, that's for sure," he said. "I hope people keep clicking. I'd love to show the rest of the country how the Midwest races."

And even if he doesn't make the cut, Bruns said the experience has been worth it.

"I've enjoyed every bit of it. We've had a ton of media coverage, which has been neat," he said. "You know, I'm still the kid from Lincoln; really nobody. But I'm starting to feel like somebody."

Bruns cracks top 15 for shot at reality show

Published Friday, July 07, 2006

Lincoln native Patrick Bruns continues to have luck in his pursuit to be featured on a NASCAR reality show, but he can't catch a break on the track.

Bruns moved into the top 15 this week and currently sits at No. 13 for a chance to be selected as one of a dozen drivers to compete on the TV show "Racin' for a Livin.'"

"We are going the right way, which is good," Bruns said. "We only have about 25 days left so it's getting down to crunch time. It's starting to get exciting."

Bruns is one of 50 who were selected from thousands of applicants. The group will be narrowed down to 15 - three will be reserve - via Internet voting at www.racinforalivin.com. People can vote for Bruns as many times as they like until the July 31 deadline.

If selected, Bruns will compete with the other drivers for 15 weeks for a chance to drive a fully sponsored NASCAR Busch Car.

In the meantime, Bruns continues to do as much promotional work as possible to put him into the top 12. He is shooting a CITV5 spot today for the Saturday Sports Show, which airs at 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and is repeated again at 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. He also will be featured on Springfield television, Fox WSRP/WCCU 55, sometime next week, he said.

"I envision (the standings) moving a lot as we approach the last half month," Bruns said. "I hope it will go up, but everyone in the competition is trying as hard as I am."

On the track, though, Bruns continued a string of bad luck as his gearbox broke in a qualifying run in Terre Haute. The previous week, his sprint car got sandwiched in a crash at a track in Missouri.

"I'll tell you what, I have never had a string of bad luck like this," Bruns said. "I guess all the years of having good fortune is catching up with me."

Bruns, who is a financial adviser in Champaign, remains positive despite the misfortunes. He knows a few bad races can be made up quickly with a selection to the show.

"This is a chance of a lifetime so it's on my mind all day long," he said. "It's taken a lot of dedication and I appreciate all of the support that we have had."

Racin' voting heads into final month

By Michael Freimann
mfreimann@pantagraph.com

CHAMPAIGN -- A Lincoln native trying to get on a racing-based reality show says he is confident he can still make the show as Internet-based voting heads into its final month.

Patrick Bruns, a 30-year-old Lincoln native and 1994 graduate of Lincoln High School, is one of 50 race car drivers from around the country vying for 12 spots in soon-to-be filmed racing-themed reality series, “Racin’ for a Livin.’”

Show promoters are allowing fans to vote for their favorite driver on the Internet at www.racinforalivin.com through July 31, with the top 12 voter getters spending 3 1/2 months racing against each other on Charlotte, N.C.- area tracks.

The winner gets a chance to drive a NASCAR Busch Series car in the 2007 of stock car racing’s second-tier division.

“I have talked with the producers of “Racin’ for a Livin’” and I feel very confident about making the final cut,” Bruns said Thursday. “Today we are 17th, two weeks ago we were 23rd. The race is tight and we need to stay strong until the end.”

Bruns, who has raced in several different classes, including open-wheel non-winged sprints, winged 410 cubic-inch sprint cars and 360 cubic inch sprints, as well as full-sized midgets and modifieds, has spent a good chunk of the past two months promoting his cause in the media and has organized “power hour” voting sessions for supporters to get on the Net and vote for him.

“This is a chance for Central Illinois to be represented in this national competition,” Bruns said. “The closer we get to the end, the more fan support we are going to need.”

Drivers selected for the racing portion of the show will compete against each other for 12 weeks following a two week training program that pairs the “rookies” with NASCAR and IndyCar veterans such as Jeremy Mayfield, Kenny Schrader, Sterling Marlin, Kenny Wallace, A.J. Foyt, Ward Burton and Harry Gant.

The drivers will race Busch series cars, with one driver being eliminated each week based on lap times, scoring by the panel of racing veterans and popular vote.

The final winner is guaranteed a seven-race deal to run in the Busch Series in 2007, with more races possible based on performance.

Bruns said he looks forward to the competition and thinks a spot on the show could help catapult him from small tracks to the big time.

“I think something to consider is last weekend’s NASCAR Busch Series race,” Bruns said. “A rookie, David Gilliland, won the race in only his seventh career start. He did this without a major team behind him, no major sponsor, basically just himself. He had the help of a coach named Jerry Nadeau, a former NASCAR veteran.

“This is what Racin’ for a Livin’ is going to do. Top veteran drivers and crew chiefs will take on the task of training the rookies and polishing them into winners well-prepared for their NASCAR debut.”

Lincoln native takes shot at 'Racin'

CHAMPAIGN -- Patrick Bruns isn’t your typical reality show wanna-be. Bruns isn’t looking to win a million dollars or catapult himself to Hollywood stardom -- he simply wants the chance to pursue his lifelong dream at a higher level.

Bruns, a 30-year-old Lincoln native and 1994 graduate of Lincoln High School, is one of 50 race car drivers from around the country vying for 12 spots in the soon-to-be filmed racing-themed reality series, "Racin’ for a Livin.’"

Show promoters are currently allowing fans to vote for their favorite driver on the Internet at
www.racinforalivin.com, with the top 12 vote-getters spending 3 1/2 months racing against each other on Charlotte, N.C.- area tracks.

The winner gets a chance to drive a NASCAR Busch Series car in the 2007 season of stock car racing’s second-tier division.

"This is not about having a family to fund the deal for you," Bruns said of "Racin’ for a Livin.’" "This is a chance for a common down-home country boy to have a shot at the big time with the support of the Midwest."

In order to qualify for the show, Bruns and his fellow competitors must get out the vote, encouraging fans and just about anyone who will listen to "vote early and often" ahead of the July 31 cutoff date.

The show is being produced by Wyoming-based JVI productions, which is headed up by veteran open-wheel World of Outlaws racer Jerry VanDenHul.

There is no announced air-date or network, but Bruns said he expects the show to begin filming in September, with a possible airdate at the beginning of 2007.

As of May 24, Bruns was listed in 12th position among the 50 vote-getters, putting him in the running if online voting ended today.

Drivers selected for the racing portion of the show will compete against each other for 12 weeks following a two week training program that pairs the "rookies" with NASCAR and IndyCar veterans such as Jeremy Mayfield, Kenny Schrader, Sterling Marlin, Kenny Wallace, A.J.

The top 50 drivers were selected from thousands of applicants culled from more than a year of online submis-sions.

Although he’s never climbed into a NASCAR stock car, Bruns, who is the son of Roger and Kathy Bruns of Lincoln, is no "rookie" when it comes to racing.

He has raced open-wheel sprint cars since he was a teen-ager, getting started by following his dad to the track.

"My dad used to race sprint cars, and I grew up going to the race track with him," Bruns said. "Dad used to run a lawn-mower repair business and he traded a lawn mower for my first race car. It wasn’t much of a car."

Bruns has raced in several different classes, including open-wheel non-winged sprints, winged 410 cubic-inch sprint cars and 360 cubic-inch sprints, as well as full-sized midgets and modifieds.

He said he currently runs about 30 to 40 races a year when not working his day job as a financial planner at Advanced Financial Group in Champaign or spending time with wife, Bonnie, and their dog, Boomer.

Bruns said he hopes his varied experience gives him a leg up in the competition if he makes it onto the track.

"We’ve run on dirt and do some pavement racing over in Indiana and they’re both a challenge," Bruns said. "What’s helped me more than anything is having raced multiple classes of cars at different tracks and on surfaces."

Fans can find Bruns’ short-track schedule on his Web site at
www.brunsracing.com. In addition to his usual schedule of events mostly in Indiana, Bruns will be running a few events at the year-old Lincoln Speedway in his hometown.

"I’ve only raced a couple of times there," Bruns said of the Lincoln track. "If it had been there when I was growing up it sure would have been nice to travel two minutes to the track instead of two hours or more."

Of his chances at making the show, Bruns said, "I feel confi-dent we’re going to have a shot to go do this," but if it doesn’t pan out, he’ll just keep on doing what he does.

"I’m enjoying life now," Bruns said. "I’m happily married and I get to race two or three nights a week for great car owners."

Patrick Bruns, "A STAR OF TOMORROW" By Dennis Michelsen
Racing often is a family business for so many drivers. "My Dad ran the last full service gas station, and a lawn mower repair shop on the side. He traded a lawn mower for my first race car," remarked Bruns. Now the thirty-year old Bruns from Champaign, Illinois drives a lot of different kinds of cars for top owners. "I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I went from a lawn mower race car to first class equipment and won!" From winged and non-winged sprint cars to modifieds to midgets Patrick has driven it all. This year he took on the best of the best in the world of midget racing at the famed "Chili Bowl." "It's an honor to make the top fifty for the inaugural Racin' for a Livin' Competition. There is some hefty competition and I am appreciative to make the cut so far." So far Patrick's strategy has been to promote the show first and foremost. "I want others to have the same opportunity that I have had so far." Like so many drivers, making it to NASCAR has been a life long dream for Patrick, now the fans can help make that dream come true with their votes!

PostPosted: Sun Mar 19, 2006 5:25 pm    Post subject: Rookie Patrick Bruns

Hello everyone. My name is Patrick Bruns, and I just want to take a moment and thank Jerry VanDenHul and JVI Productions for this awesome opportunity. I cannot begin to describe what an honor it is to have been chosen as one of the elite TOP 50 for the inaugural Racin’ for a Livin’ Competition. Circumstances such as these have been among my deepest desires ever since I began racing at 15. Until two years ago, however, they were only in my dreams and now they are a reality so close I can almost reach out and touch them. Never before have I been so grateful for such an unbelievable opportunity. I look forward not only to promoting this show today, but well into the future to give others the same opportunity that I have been blessed with. I began my racing career when my father, a former Sprint Car Racer, traded a lawn mower for my first Micro Midget. Since then I have raced Mini Sprints, Midgets both on dirt and pavement, Winged Sprint Cars, Non-Winged Sprint Cars, and Classic Modifieds. What I admire most about this show, is that the Race Fans have an opportunity to choose NASCAR’s future stars. The Fans are given a voice. I want to encourage anyone and everyone who is a race fan to spread the word about this incredible show. I am going to need an abundance of support from not only my current fans but also my future fans. This competition will not be easy for anyone and I want to thank everyone in advance for their votes and make it known how much I dearly appreciate their support. I wish all the competitors the best of luck and want everyone to know that I will represent JVI Productions with the utmost sincerity and integrity. Please take a few moments and visit my personal website @ www.brunsracing.com. And once again, thank you very much.

Patrick Bruns has been selected for Racin' For A Livin' Competition

The prize: a chance to drive in the NASCAR BUSCH Series in 2007.

The drivers come from all walks of life, and from all areas of the country, and even from Canada. A universal constant at any track are the stories of how drivers got their start in racing. Some followed in a family member’s tire tracks, or were inspired by some of the founding fathers of the sport. Ask a driver, and he or she will give you an entire map of the roads that led them to their first racecar ride. Many have been racing since before they could drive legally on the highways; some, like Patrick Bruns, are second generation racers who thrive to carry on the family tradition.  Please support Patrick and begin voting on March 28, 2006.
